Breaking Free from Phone Addiction: Practical Tips for a Healthier Life

In today’s digital world, it’s easy to become glued to our phones—constantly checking social media, scrolling through endless feeds, or feeling the urge to respond to every notification. But excessive phone use can steal our time, distract us from meaningful relationships, and even affect our mental and spiritual well-being. If you’ve been feeling the weight of phone addiction, here are some practical ways to break free and regain control of your time.

1. Set Boundaries with Screen Time Limits

Many smartphones have built-in screen time tracking and app limit features. Use these tools to set daily limits on social media, games, or other apps that tend to consume too much of your time. Setting a timer can also help—decide how long you’ll spend on your phone and stick to it.

2. Create a Phone-Free Morning and Night Routine

Start and end your day without your phone. Instead of scrolling first thing in the morning, spend time in prayer, read your Bible, or journal your thoughts. At night, try reading a book or listening to peaceful music instead of getting lost in social media. Keeping your phone out of your bedroom can also help improve sleep quality.

3. Turn Off Unnecessary Notifications

Notifications constantly pull our attention away from real life. Go through your settings and disable alerts for apps that aren’t urgent. This small step can make a huge difference in reducing the temptation to check your phone.

4. Replace Screen Time with Meaningful Activities

Find hobbies or activities that don’t involve screens—go for a walk, start a new book, journal, or spend time with family and friends. If you enjoy being creative, try scrapbooking, painting, or writing. Keeping your hands busy with something productive can make it easier to resist the phone.

5. Use the “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” Method

If you find yourself picking up your phone out of habit, place it in another room or put it in a drawer when you’re working, reading, or spending time with loved ones. The less accessible it is, the less likely you are to reach for it mindlessly.

6. Take Social Media Breaks

Sometimes, taking a step back from social media can help break the cycle of constant scrolling. Try a weekend or week-long fast from certain apps and use that time to focus on things that truly matter—your faith, relationships, and personal growth.

7. Be Intentional About Phone Use

Before picking up your phone, ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” If you don’t have a specific reason, challenge yourself to put it back down. Being mindful of your phone habits helps you recognize when you’re using it out of boredom rather than necessity.

8. Spend More Time in God’s Word

Instead of reaching for your phone, reach for your Bible. The more we fill our minds with God’s truth, the less we crave distractions that don’t satisfy. Use a physical Bible instead of a Bible app to avoid the temptation of checking notifications while reading.

9. Set “No Phone” Zones

Establish certain places where phone use is not allowed, such as the dinner table, church, or during family time. This encourages more meaningful conversations and helps build stronger connections with those around you.

10. Ask for God’s Help

Breaking a phone addiction isn’t just about willpower—it’s about inviting God into the process. Pray for self-control, wisdom, and discernment in how you use technology. Ask Him to help you use your time wisely and to prioritize what truly matters.

By being intentional about our phone habits, we can reclaim our time, strengthen our relationships, and deepen our faith. Breaking free from phone addiction isn’t about completely eliminating technology—it’s about using it in a way that honors God and enriches our lives.

The Brave Little Tiger

One day, River the tiger snuggled up close to one of his best friends, Little Robin. She was reading him a story, her soft voice carrying the words as River listened intently. "Tommy was a little tiger who loved Jesus! He told all the kids about God’s love. He said Jesus died for them and came back to life! And guess what? Jesus wants to be their friend forever!" Little Robin read, her eyes twinkling as she spoke of Tommy's bravery.

River’s eyes grew wide with excitement. "Whoa! Tommy is super brave! I wanna be brave like him and tell people about Jesus too! But… how do I do that?"

Little Robin smiled warmly at her friend, closing the book for a moment. "Well, River, the Bible says that if someone asks why we have hope, we should tell them about Jesus."

River thought hard, his little tail swishing back and forth. "So… if someone asks why I’m always so happy, I can say, ‘Because Jesus loves me!’?"

"Exactly!" Little Robin said. "And you can show Jesus' love in all kinds of ways, too. You can be kind, help others, and show love just like Jesus does. People will see that and want to know more about the love you have."

River nodded, feeling more confident. "I like that idea! But wait—how can little tiger me share Jesus with the whole big world?"

Little Robin grinned. "There are so many ways! You can pray for people who are sad or hurting. You can listen to them when they need a friend. You can also share stories about what Jesus has done in your life."

"How can I do this," asked River.

"You already do this. You share stories, sing songs, and help people learn about God’s love. That’s super special, River!"

"I do. In what way?" River asked.

"Through your YouTube channel. You reach a lot of kids with the River and Me Ministries YouTube channel."

River’s face lit up with excitement. "Do you think that I am making a difference?"

Little Robin nodded with a sparkle in her eye. "Oh yes, River! Jesus loves it when we share His love with others. When you love people and tell them about Him, you are shining His light for everyone to see."

River’s heart swelled with joy, and he stood up proudly. "I’m gonna keep shining for Jesus, Little Robin!"

"That’s the spirit!" Little Robin cheered, "You are a brave little tiger, River."

River’s grin widened, his tail swishing in excitement. "Just like Tommy?"

"Just like Tommy!" Little Robin laughed. "And remember, River, every time you share Jesus, you’re showing the world His love. Whether it's through your YouTube videos, helping a friend, or just being kind, you are making a difference."

River hugged Little Robin, feeling braver than ever before. "Thank you, Little Robin! I’m gonna keep sharing Jesus with everyone I meet!"

Little Robin smiled. "I know you will, River. You’re already doing amazing things. Keep shining, and keep sharing God's love!"

The End

In the story above, River the tiger learns how to share Jesus’ love with others from his best friend, Little Robin. As they read a story about Tommy, a brave tiger who tells everyone about Jesus, River becomes inspired to be brave and share the good news too. Little Robin explains that sharing Jesus can happen in many ways, like telling others why we’re happy, helping people, being kind, and even through River’s own YouTube channel. Little Robin reminds River that by shining God’s love, we can make a big difference in the world.

Hey kids! Just like River the tiger, you can share Jesus’ love with the world too! It doesn’t matter how old you are—there are so many ways you can tell others about Jesus and show them His love. You can share the good news by telling someone why you’re happy—because Jesus loves you! You can be kind, help others, and listen when someone needs a friend. Whether you’re making a video, writing a story, or just helping out at home, you are sharing Jesus with everyone around you. Remember, every time you love others and tell them about Jesus, you are shining His light in a dark world. Let’s be brave like Tommy the tiger, Little Robin and Tiger River. Let's share the love of Jesus wherever we go!

What are some ways that you share Jesus with the world?

The Armor of God: Put It On and Never Take It Off

The Bible commands us to put on the whole armor of God, but never does it say to take it off. That’s because our spiritual battle is ongoing. The enemy doesn’t rest, and neither can we. If we are to stand strong in the faith, we must remain armed at all times.

The Command to Be Armed

Ephesians 6:10-18 gives us a clear instruction:

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11, KJV)

Notice that Paul never tells us to take it off. We are in a constant battle, and our enemy, the devil, is always seeking to attack (1 Peter 5:8). The only way to stand is by keeping our spiritual armor on at all times.

The Whole Armour of God

Let’s take a closer look at the armour as described in the King James Bible:

1. The Loins Girt About With Truth

When we are girt about with truth, we will not trip—we will stand firm, walk straight, and fight strong in the Lord.

Without truth, we are vulnerable to deception. The enemy works through lies and confusion, trying to make us doubt God’s promises. But when our loins are girt about with truth, we are not easily shaken.

2. The Breastplate of Righteousness

Righteousness protects our hearts. Living according to God’s ways shields us from sin and strengthens our faith.

3. The Feet Shod With the Preparation of the Gospel of Peace

Our walk should be steady and sure, ready to stand firm in Christ and share the gospel wherever we go.

4. The Shield of Faith

This is our defense against the fiery darts of the wicked. The enemy will throw doubt, fear, and temptation at us, but faith in God will quench them all.

5. The Helmet of Salvation

Without Salvation our whole armor is no good. We can't fight without being defeated when we don't have Salvation.

6. The Sword of the Spirit, Which Is the Word of God

The Bible says,

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Jesus Himself used Scripture to defeat Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11)

7. Praying Always With All Prayer and Supplication in the Spirit

Though not a physical piece of armor, prayer is what keeps us connected to God. Without prayer, our armor would weaken, and we would be vulnerable for a attack.

Why We Should Never Take It Off

Many Christians think of the armour of God as something they put on in the morning and take off at night. But the Bible never says to remove it.

1 Peter 5:8 warns us:

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

The enemy doesn’t take breaks, so we can’t afford to either. If we remove even one piece of our armor, we leave an opening for attack.

Living in Victory

The armour of God is not just for difficult times—it’s for all times. When we stay armed with truth, righteousness, faith, and the Word, we can stand strong against the enemy.

So put on the whole armour of God—and never take it off!

Why I Took Social Media Apps Off My Phone

For a long time, I found myself constantly checking social media—scrolling, refreshing, and getting lost in the endless cycle. It left me feeling drained.

That’s when I made the decision to remove all social media apps from my phone. (This includes YouTube)

Now, if I want to check my socials, or watch a YouTube video, I can only do so from my laptop.

At first, it felt a little strange not having everything at my fingertips, but I quickly noticed a huge improvement in my mental health. Without the constant notifications and temptation to mindlessly scroll, I feel so much more present in my day-to-day life. And I have more time to focus on my blog.

This change has helped me refocus my energy on things that truly matter—spending time with God, being creative, and enjoying real-life moments without distraction. I no longer feel the pull to check my phone every few minutes, and that in itself is freeing.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by social media, I highly recommend trying this. You might be surprised at how much lighter and more peaceful you feel when you’re not constantly plugged in.

The Bible as the Ultimate Authority: Examining What We’ve Been Taught

Relying on Scripture: A Call to Filter What We’ve Been Taught

In our journey of faith, we often rely on the wisdom and teachings of those around us. Our pastors, teachers, parents, and friends all play vital roles in shaping our understanding of God’s Word and how we should live. However, sometimes, even with the best intentions, the things we’ve been taught can be off or incomplete. In such moments, we need to remember the importance of filtering all teachings through the truth of Scripture.

The Need for Discernment

In the Bible, we’re urged to prove everything. In 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV), Paul encourages believers, saying, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” This instruction reminds us that while the things we hear from others can be helpful, they must be weighed against the final authority: God’s Word. People can be misled or mistaken, and it’s crucial to examine teachings and beliefs through the lens of Scripture.

The Danger of Misunderstandings

Throughout history, many teachings have been passed down with good intentions but have been inaccurate or distorted. This can happen when cultural practices or personal opinions influence our understanding of the Bible.

We can't accept something simply because it’s familiar or because it’s what we’ve been taught, we are called to dig into the Word of God and ensure our beliefs align with His truth.

Filtering Teachings Through Scripture

When we encounter a topic that we’re uncertain about or that we’ve been taught differently, it’s important to filter our understanding through Scripture. Here’s how we can do this:

1. Read the Bible for Yourself

The best way to know what Scripture says is to read it directly. Don’t rely on someone else’s interpretation alone. Take the time to study the Word and allow it to speak to your heart. As 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

2. Look for Context

Verses are often taken out of context to support certain beliefs or practices. It’s essential to read the passages surrounding the verse to understand the full meaning. This prevents misinterpretation and helps us grasp the intent of the passage.

3. Pray for Wisdom

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding as you study. James 1:5 (KJV) promises that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

4. Seek Accountability

It’s also helpful to discuss difficult or confusing topics with trusted mentors or fellow believers who also prioritize Scripture.

In a world where there’s so much information and so many voices, we must remember that the Bible is our ultimate guide. As we grow in our faith, let’s be diligent in examining all we hear and learn, comparing it to God’s Word. In doing so, we will be better equipped to live out the truth and avoid the pitfalls of false teaching.

Conclusion

Never be afraid to question what you’ve been taught. Instead, filter everything through the lens of Scripture. The truth of God’s Word is unchanging, and it’s the foundation we can always rely on. Whether it’s in the teachings of others or in our own lives, let Scripture guide us toward truth and away from error. The more we align ourselves with God’s Word, the closer we draw to Him and the greater clarity we gain in our walk with Him.

Swapping time spent scrolling with reading

Recently, I made a decision to be more intentional with how I spend my time. Instead of scrolling endlessly on social media, I’ve started us...
